A week in Vegas, NV

What an incredible week I had in Las Vegas, staying with friends and supporters.

During the week we were able to get a lot accomplished! I met new contacts, Encouraged friends, learned a thing or two about networking, talked with a woman in MN about some interest in Madagascar, talked with a friend about a possible contact in Colorado and much much more.

I was even able to travel to a couple of churches and give them my information. I will be praying about the follow up this week along with generating a letter on email. Praying that when I am able to drive back through Vegas in March on my way to Colorado I could stop by again and solidify some partnerships!

Thanks Tim and Sherrie for allowing me to crash at your house, pick your brains, make friends on networking and jewlery making also for all the visits to Starbucks! I will not ever be the same!

Searching for a friend

For the last couple of months I have been having these dreams about a person from my past.  Then as I am praying during the day, the Lord is bringing that person to my thoughts and prayers. We fell out of contact many years ago and for that I am truly saddened...  It could have been like many other relationships that just fell to the way side and I never lifted another finger to find them or tell them the mighty ways that GOD was bringing them to my mind. Or we could have recently re-connected on facebook, had a brief conversation and gone another set of years without another thought.  Is that really what we are meant to do here on this earth? Is there more to this life when it comes to relationships with other people?

Well, at church over the last month we have been reading this book. One month to live, living a no-regrets life and it has been touching me in ways that I never thought.  The impact at first was minimal.  I have been focused a bit more on the day to day as I have been planning on moving overseas, making sure that there aren't any bits of unfinished business in my life.  Things that need to be said or time with people just listening. Learning and absorbing as much as I possibly can in the process.

So I am sure that you can imagine as I have been praying and this particular person has been coming to my mind, I have been choosing to take hold of the reigns in my life and find them. Tell them what GOD has been doing, how I am constantaly reminded to pray for them and that GOD has not left them, still has a plan for them and desperately wants them smack in the center of HIS DREAMS and DESIRES.

For now, I may have to let Go of this and leave it in GOD's very capable hands, knowing full well that sometimes when we pray for someone we will not see the immediate results, know the direct impact or even get to walk alongside the friend in the journey.  GOD will be there and that MUST be enough!

The Journey

Today I had a conversation with my cousin that I really needed to have - sometimes he can be that voice of reason that I don't seem to hear anywhere else?  Usually it is when I know GOD is trying to tell me something and yet I don't want to learn it, that is when Danny steps in and says "Yes, you need to go and apologize to ..."  even when I don't want to hear it.  At least that is the situation this given time.

There is something about our relationship, the TRUTH that comes from each of us LOVEing the LORD, trying to LEARN from our mistakes, walking the best we can in HIS WORD and trying to LIVE it out amongst those around us as best we can. He may be my cousin but often times I think of him as an older brother.  It may even help that his failures are not hidden but out there for everyone to see, plain as the ground we walk on and the air we breathe?

I am very thankful for the Lord in my life and the people, albeit strange the connection some times, the people that HE uses to sharpen me, shape me and refine me.  I am blessed to have people like that in my life...  Are you open to people like that in your life?

We were able to connect up for dinner while I was out here in Vegas!  What a great dinner because of the company, the treasure I have in him.  I am upset that we did not get to take a picture together but that time spent together will always be a treasure in my memory.

Chinese New Year

WOW! I have been able to experience a little bit of the commercialized Chinese New Year in Las Vegas. They go all out with decorations. This is very different from those that are really in China celebrating New Year, I am sure of it.

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Antananarivo (Tana for short)

This in from a book I have been reading, I thought that the description was right on and should be shared:

Antananarivo is the capitol city of Madagascar.  Located in the East Central Mountain region or High Plateau area, houses a bustling city of over 2,000,000 people.  "Tana" as the locals call it is a harmonious tumble of earth-red brick houses from grandiose to miserable, amazing pocket gardens, rice pattys and disturbing garbage dumps, modernized strip malls and bustling market places, hollowed out automobiles, grid-lock traffic jams, prestigious business people and street urchins: "love it or hate it but it won't leave you indifferent."

The only international airport lands in this city.

More later!

Natural Disasters - Cyclones

Natural Disasters:

Most of us have experienced some type of Natural Disaster during our lifetime.  Those of us living in CA have experienced our fair share of Earthquakes, on the East coast it would be Hurricanes and Tornadoes, in the Mountain Range areas Avalanches.  Anywhere it rains we experience Lightning and for some more distant locations, Tsunamis are a real part of life.

One of the most prominent disasters Madagascar faces is Cyclones as noted in the recent news this week.

Tidbits from multiple resources that I have been reading with facts on Madagascar...  Sources listed at bottom of article...

Cyclones, At the beginning of every year, tropical cyclones form far out over the Indian Ocean, usually starting in December or January and lasting until mid April. If they reach the east coast of Madagascar, they can bring sheets of rain so heavy that they blot out the view. The high rainfall also creates flooding in low-lying areas.  Every few years, an especially severe cyclone hits the island, causing tremendous destruction and loss of life.  1 & 2

This year is a year like many others when it comes to cyclones... Just this week a couple of cyclones, Eric and Fanele, hit Madagascar causing winds over 130 miles an hour, leaving more than 20,000 homeless and killing about 9 people. At least 97 people were killed in January last year when two cyclones swept through the island, while 150 others were killed the previous year, 2007.  1 & 2

When a cyclone hits land it oftentimes creates other disasters, destroying rice fields, making devastating paths through what is left of tropical rain forests.  Flooding adds to the threat of Cholera.  People whom die from Cholera must be buried quickly to prevent the spread of the disease, the cyclone may disrupt the traditional malagasy burial rituals and weaken the people's close ties to their ancestors. 1

No matter where you live there are Natural Disasters, are you ready for the next one?  Are you ok in relationship with others in your life?  Do you have things that you need to say?   Are you living a regret free life?  I have learned over the last 3 years to take hold of every opportunity and be ready for what ever is coming your way.   A life without REGRET.

Malagasy Proverbs

Malagasy Proverbs are oftentimes printed on lamba's  (cloths)...

here are the proverbs that I have printed on the lamba's that I own...

TSO DRANO ZAVA MAHERY
(purple lamba with a picture of an elephant means)
May strong blessings come from my mouth

MASO MAHITA TSY MITONDRA MODY
(bright orange and red lamba with large flower pattern)
the one who sees and understands doesn't return home

JESOSY RO HAZOMANGA SOA
(blue lamba with flower print)
Jesus is the tree of life or Jesus is as strong as a mango tree

Christ in us foundation

At the end of last year I had the divine opportunity to meet some friends of a good friend of mine.  We all met for lunch, shared in great food and wonderful conversation, talking about how the Lord had gotten each of us to this point in time.  Then we shared about the ministries that God had led us to individually. We talked about Mexico, Madagascar and local ministry in LA and Orange Counties.

The two men, Scott and John, have started a growing foundation, Christ in us, that is doing its part in furthering the kingdom, as the Lord leads and guides both themselves and others that end up powerfully partnering to transform lives for Christ.

They have posted my information there on that site and have made a commitment to help financially!   What a blessed time this was especially as we finished the day in prayer, fully covered by the Lord!

I am blessed beyond measure and looking forward to what the Lord is going to do in and through these contacts in the coming year.

Traveling to Mt. Hermon

It looks like I will be traveling to Mt. Hermon at the end of Feb!   What a blessing ahead.

Please pray that it would be:

 A restful time.
A magnificent time to network but that great big, solid connections would come from it.
That I would have opportunity to share my FAITH journey with others.
That I would have opportunities to meet with others along the journey there and on the way home.

Opportunity to serve the community

The last Saturday of this month, January there is an opportunity to serve others in a local setting and I have been blessed with being a liason in communicating the needs and getting the information to my mid week small group.

Would you join me in praying for all the people that come to receive food. For the conversations that will happen amongst the people serving and those being served.  Pray that all of our hearts will be in the right place, serving God, while serving amongst believers and those whom are just out to do good deeds.

What a blessing.  I look forward to the conversations and what the Lord will do when this all comes together.

If anyone wants to join us the info follows here:

connecting with an old friend

What a blessed day it was today to meet up with a friend that I have not seen nor really interacted with for the last 15 years. Patty and I met years ago when we both attended a College youth group at Saddleback church in Mission Viejo, CA.

It was a great day to catch up, hear all that her life has turned into, see how we were both growing in the Lord, hear about her family (husband and kids) and talk about the journey to Madagascar for me. It was an amazing time. This is one of the friends that I reconnected with through facebook. Again, what a blessing!

She still has the same energy for life and wonderful laugh that will always cause me to smile. Praise the Lord for good friends

2 Years and an answered prayer

Video - I have been praying and asking around for the last two years for someone to help me make a video regarding my ministry in Madagascar.   I made a couple of attempts on my own but nothing worth watching.

Recently someone videotaped me sharing about Madagascar at a home group meeting and made a quick 10 minute brief video of it for someone that could not make it to the meeting.  I am so very excited!  We are going to meet again this week and do a few more clips.  Please be looking back in the following weeks for the video.  I will post it when it is done.

I just love it when I see answered prayers, no matter how long I have to pray.   Thanks to the Lord, God Almighty!

Traveling to Vegas

As this journey I am on "toward full time ministry overseas in Madagascar" continues I find myself blessed with an opportunity to travel to VEGAS this coming week.

I have been blessed with a friend that lives in Vegas, NV whom has been telling friends and family members about me in hopes that some of those contacts would be interested in partnering in this wonderful ministry!    God thing - it has happened with one for sure and there could be others.

As I was sharing bits of this story with a good friend her spouse popped his head into the conversation and said "I am going to Vegas this coming week, you want to tag along?"  Well, I almost dismissed it as I was sure that it was to quick of a trip to pull off, with maximum impact.  Then I started to think what would be my idea of maximum impact and what is God's idea of maximum KINGDOM impact?

Then I found myself praying about this opportunity and realized that this journey has been more about building my FAITH than ever before!  Who am I to keep that to myself?  I need to grab hold of opportunities and get out there sharing this journey of FAITH that I am on and hopefully encouraging others in their FAITH as well.

So, a week from today my friend and I will drive to Vegas where Lord willing, doors will be opened and I will be able to share with many people about this amazing opportunity to be in a powerful partnership with the goal of transforming lives for the kingdom of GOD.

I treasure your prayers with me regarding this journey!   Looking forward to posting an update of all that GOD did in VEGAS!

A great morning at the beach

It is amazing what a refreshing time one can have when given the opportunity to get out of the house, beyond 4 walls, beyond the busy city traffic, and the hustle and bustle of busy southern California life.

I was blessed today to take time out to go to the beach with a good friend. We walked around, talked and took pictures of the many people and things there. What a relaxing day. We even had an amazing opportunity to talk with my cousin and his girlfriend over a late breakfast.

Here are a couple of crazy cool shots that I would like to remember. Enjoy!

Marine life around Madagascar

I found myself reading something over and over again over these past months.  It was an article that my field leader from Madagascar sent to me to help me understand the plight of the local fishermen in Madagascar.

I have posted it here, unfortunately I lost the trail of exactly where this came from - who posted it or wrote it in the first place but because I have traveled there on two different occasions I know this to be true.  I also find myself thinking about "HOW" to help and really make a difference.

Article:

As cute as things may look in the children's film Madagascar 2, the reality is far from pretty.

Human over-population and over exploitation of natural resources is turning this once lush semi-tropical paradise into a wasteland.

And as bad as things are on land, the conditions are far more dire in the surrounding seas.

All along the coasts of Madagascar, there has been a dramatic decrease in all marine life. It was a decline that began in 2000 and is rapidly escalating. Thanks to excessive demand from China, the sea cucumbers have disappeared and octopus populations have been severely impacted. Many fish specise have simply disappeared.

Yet the fishing continues and will continue until nothing is left because people cannot afford to discontinue their exploitation even in the face of total certain collapse.

Roger Samba, a villager from Andavadoaka, in Toliara Province, recently told the media, "It is difficult to catch enough fish to sell. People go far away, fishing from early in the morning until late at night, to catch not even 10kg or 20kg of fish - just 5kg.

Shark populations have been severely effected as natives slaughter every shark they can find to feed the lucrative shark fin market.

The coral reef system along Madagascar's southwestern coast at over 500km long is one of the largest in the world.  Every month these reefs become more and more barren. In short they are dying.

The fishermen argue that they are so poor that they cannot stop fishing yet if they continue they will be forced to stop with nothing left and the ecological and sociological consequences will be enormous and devastating.

Demand for shark fin in China, where the meat is considered a delicacy, and for sea cucumbers, which are believed to be an aphrodisiac, have become major sources of income in Madagascar, which exports up to 20 tons of shark fins every year. A kilogram can fetch as much as 140,000 ariary ($56) on local markets, and up to $1,000 in China.

Alibaba seafoods, the company owned by Yahoo is one of the leading corporations responsible for diminishing shark populations.

"It's a strange world, where an internet company like Yahoo is responsible for the destruction fo the world's shark populations," said Captain Paul Watson.

Madagascar has very little enforcement.

"The laws regarding the exploitation of marine resources are not implemented here in Madagascar," said Man Wai Rabenevanana, director of the Institute of Marine Science in Toliara. "The state doesn't invest enough in managing marine resources and capacity building to allow them to manage resources effectively."

Madagascar has a long way to go in protecting its marine resources. "It is very difficult to stop fishermen from catching shark and collecting sea cucumbers, "said Rabenevanana. "These fishermen are poor and the attraction of fishing for sharks and sea cucumbers is huge. If we truly want to protect our resources we must address the market. We must do more to discourage the Chinese from eating shark fin soup; perhaps we can even find an alternative."

The decline of the primary predator could unbalance the entire marine food chain. Studies in the Caribbean have shown that too few sharks mean other carnivorous species increase and eat too many other useful fish, such as those keeping algae on the coral in check, which can eventually endanger the entire reef ecosystem.

"The disappearance of sharks would have devastating impacts on marine habitats and the local communities that depend on these,"  Frances Humber, a marine biologist studying shark populations in southern and western Madagascar with the British conservation organisation, Blue Ventures, told IRIN.

"A collapse in the shark fishing industry could threaten the economic stability of the region, and would mean the loss of livelihoods for thousands of fisherman."

Clarisse, a sea cucumber and octopus supplier in Belavenoke said: "Life is getting harder all the time here, because there is no way of earning money except from fishing. It is only the sea that gives us money, but the fish are fewer and fewer, and I am worried about this."

But not it seems, so worried as to do anything about it.

Tripple Threat

Bowling! Who would have thought this would even come up as a topic... Well, the start of 2009 has been interesting to say the least. Before I knew what was happening I was on a bowling team, in a league to help out my Mother and my Step - Grandmother....

They lost a team member last year and were hoping to find someone that could fill in for the rest of the bowling season... I am not sure how long I will be able to play but for now this is what I will be doing on Mondays in the weeks to come. I was very reluctant but have found this to be a great place to unwind and let go of all stress at the start of each week.

This is even doing wonders for my relationship with my Mother and I am getting to know my Grandmother, Norma as well. We have really needed a place to play with each other as our relationship has been more of a working relationship than one of Mother and Daughter since Steve's stroke in 2006.
Today we each were able to pull off a STRIKE in the same frame and so we documented as any good family would do. I am still working on my form, and my handicap so right now this is really just fun, no numbers to beat for now.

Live every day like you were dying

I have been going through a book
"One month to live" "Thirty days to a no-regrets life" and heard this song, thought that it was very fitting, the words seem to touch on the very idea of living a no regrets life.

Tim sings it better than I do that is for sure! But here are the words anyway.

Great SONG by Tim McGraw
He said I was in my early forties
with a lot of life before me
when a moment came that stopped me on a dime
and I spent most of the next days
looking at the x-rays
Talking bout the options
and talking bout sweet time
I asked him when it sank in
that this might really be the real end
how's it hit you when you get that kinda news
man what'd you do

and he said
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

He said I was finally the husband
that most the time I wasn't
and I became a friend a friend would like to have
and all the sudden going fishin
wasn't such an imposition
and I went three times that year I lost my dad
well I finally read the good book
and I took a good long hard look
at what I'd do if I could do it all again

and then
I went sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.
7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I gave forgiveness I'd been denying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about
what'd you do with it what did you do with it
what did I do with it
what would I do with it?

Sky diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
and then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter
and I watched an eagle as it was flying
and he said someday I hope you get the chance
to live like you were dying.

Glowbug turns 40!

A friend, past roomate and endless treasure in my life just turned 40. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Glow Bug. Crazy to think that my friends are getting older, I don't feel any older than 25! Soon this will be me, turning 40!

Eydie and family drove in from Peoria, AZ for the event weekend. We met up at Angelo n Vinci's in downtown Fullerton in the Romeo and Juliet room for a night of celebration, pictures, food, roasting, dancing and walks down memory lane.

Here are a couple of the wonderful pictures of Eydie with her boyfriend, Robert... then with her girls: Bonnie, Hayley and Claire and then a couple of pictures of the ole' friends from back during the "Eastside" days.

What a great party. Lots of fun blessing her by sharing this time with her! Thanks to the Lord!

Meeting with Madagascar ministry team

A good friend offered to drive me to AZ so that I could meet with some of the members of the Madagascar ministry team. What a blessing and answer to prayer! A quick 3 day trip in to Phoenix, AZ to meet with some of the Team. Pictured here from Right to Left are: me of course, then Rich and Bonnie Shattenberg (Madagascar team leaders) and Sandi Horen (my partner in ministry)
We talked, laughed and prayed with each other even as we drempt a bit for the future.

Bonnie looks incredibly good after about 7 chemo treatments since the cancer has returned. They are continuing all treatments as planned and it looks like all the efforts are working well.

Sandi was in Phoenix, AZ passing through on her way back to Michigan to spend a little bit more time with her family before she departs back to Madagascar. It was great to spend time with her at dinner, talking about what we are hoping for in the future ministry together.

January Praise and Prayers 2009

What an amazing year so far!

Praises:
1.)  Full recovery from surgeries in November.  It is good to feel whole again!  Praise the Lord for how HE provides in every detail, every day!

2.) ANSWERED prayers - over the holidays while I was recovering from surgeries, I was praying for a ministry to orphaned children to start in the same city that I will be living in Madagascar.  Just last week, I heard from Sandi, my partner in ministry that has been living in Madagascar - there is a couple from Germany that are feeling a change in their ministry and opening an orphanage. They have the full support of their churches behind them!   I love to see God at work!

3.) An amazing day to connect with some of the Madagascar team while they were in AZ.  We just had one day but made the most of it, talked, prayed and of course took pictures, and dreamed about the future possibilities GOD has for each of us.

4.) A year of Promise and change ahead as my support grows so do departure plans.  Support has steadied at about 80%.  ONLY 20% left to traverse!  YAHOO!   THIS IS an AMAZING PRAISE!

PRAYER:
1.) Please join me in praying that GOD would provide opportunities to share about the work in Madagascar with new people passionate about POWERFUL partnerships, transforming lives across the globe.   OF course that the last 20% of support would not only come in but it would be rooted in the LORDS bounty, plentiful as that is all across the United States.

2.) Sandi Horen (my partner in ministry for Madagascar) Pray for her family in Michigan as they just had to put her mother into a "home" over the holidays and her father is not doing well in the transition. She will be trying to help get him into healthy routines before she departs back to Madagascar in February.

3.) Pray that I would be able to carve out time to read the many books that I need to read as suppliments and teaching tools that have been given and referenced to me.  I tend to find so many things to keep me busy, as I am sure that most of you can relate to as well.

Blessings and love to you all as you start a MAGNIFICENT year of CHANGE in 2009!
